To create a seamless connection between the home and the garden, large sliding patio doors are being specified more frequently. At the same time, these sliding door systems are becoming larger and heavier, whether manufactured from timber, aluminium or uPVC. One aspect that is sometimes underestimated, however, is the importance of proper anchorage. In particular, the fixing of the bottom frame requires careful attention.

When a sliding door is opened, the sliding panels are often positioned behind one another. This results in a concentrated load being transferred to a single location. Depending on the number of sliding panels, this load can become two, three or even four times greater. As a result, there is an increased risk of deflection in the threshold or bottom frame.

"The key factor is the fixing of the bottom frame, as this is where the entire load is transferred," explains Arjan van Termeij of GB. "From a structural calculation perspective, the design may still comply, but sliding door systems are extremely sensitive to settlement and deformation. Even a slight deflection of just a few millimetres can significantly affect the smooth operation of the door."

Prevent Complaints by Limiting Deformation
Although a structure may technically comply with the required standards, this does not automatically guarantee that a sliding patio door will continue to perform optimally. Even minor deformation of the threshold can cause the door to operate less smoothly or require readjustment. This not only causes inconvenience for occupants but can also result in service visits and additional maintenance costs.

According to GB, this calls for a more robust solution than merely meeting the minimum structural requirements.

Double Fixing with Window Front Frame Support and Tie Anchor
To minimise deformation as much as possible, GB recommends a double fixing solution using a window front frame support in combination with tie anchors.

The window front frame support provides direct support beneath the threshold, transferring loads directly to the foundation or to raised masonry. This prevents deflection and helps ensure the long-term stability and smooth operation of the door system. An insulated closure board keeps the window front frame support concealed from view.

In addition, tie anchors secure the frame to the floor structure and safely transfer wind loads into the building structure.

This double fixing solution is currently being further integrated into the GB Advisory Tool. "The additional loads generated by large sliding patio doors are already incorporated into our calculations, but we are expanding our recommendations to advise the use of a window front frame support alongside a tie anchor," says Arjan.

This publication contains a range of commonly used frame anchorage solutions for residential construction, supplemented by practical fixing recommendations based on detailed engineering calculations.

GB is also working on integrating the Advisory Tool with BIM. This will make it even easier to apply anchorage recommendations directly within the digital building model and to document the quality and compliance of the selected solution. 

Ultimately, the quality of the finished result is determined not only by the sliding patio door itself, but also by the way it is anchored.
